Hi I am trying to find any thing about my grandfather James Fletcher Holmes b. 1880 d. 1949 from 1925
he lived at Springfield, Ashton under Lyne, now the site of Ashton tech, he was a Mill owner and owned Birch Mills in Guide Bridge, he was a Major in I think possibly the Ashton TA I have his dress sword and the monarch was the VII

Hi Rick, and welcome.

Son of James Holmes (Civil Engineer) b.Derby c.1834 and Elizabeth Ann (nee Fletcher) b.Oldham c.1855). They were married at Manchester Cathedral in 1875 and were living at Holmdene, Mossley Rd, Ashton in 1881.

Anyone with Fletcher ancestors from Oldham is almost certainly a relative of mine  :)

He was 3rd Volunteer Battalion of The Manchester Regiment promoted Lieutenant 29th January 1907, became 9th Battalion of TMR with same rank on 1st April 1908

.......and James Fletcher Rushworth's parents were Luke Rushworth (b.Oldham c.1843) and Sarah (nee Fletcher, b.Oldham c. 1843). They married at Hollinwood St Margaret, 1867.

went to south africa on 18-2-1900 with the 1st volunteer active service coy,manchester regt
severly wounded at geluk on 26-8-1900
discharged 29-5-1901
sister,gertrude 5 crawford st,ashton
SA medal with clasps belfast+natal

birch mills were owned by john fletcher+sons they also had a mill on edge lane,droylsden

Can you tell me if my grandfather became a Major?

and which regiment would he be in?

How could I get cpoies of his medals?

I could see no reference to a promotion to Major in The Gazette, but I have heard tell that upon retirement Officers would title themselves as a rank above their serving rank  ???

I would suggest your next port of call would be The National Archives at Kew

Mack says he was discharged in 1901, TNA has a research guide Click here

And a general guide for researching officers here

Here are some bits I'v found on him.

1st Medal roll for the 1st VSC.

2nd Harts Army List 1909.
