Hi again,
This is my Grandad Pte 1725 William Knight. I believe this photo was probably taken in 1914 as he looks very young and is still able bodied. Hope this works as I have more photos.

Hi again,
Glad you like the photos. To give a bit of background info, the group pic I believe was taken in France although I cannot confirm this.It may be a long shot but I wonder if anyone out there recognises any of the other soldiers.William enlisted in the 1/10th in 1914 at Rifle Street Oldham which is our home town although he was transfered to the 1/9th(Ashton) at a later date.At this moment I have no idea
when he was transfered,so,not knowing when the pic was taken I suppose the other lads could either be from Oldham or Ashton!!
                                     Thats all for now
                                                           Allan.

Allan,

The photo is of men of the Transport Section, 10th (TF) Bn. Manchester Regiment.

Taken at Summer Camp well before the outbreak of WW1 I would say.

They still have the Long Lee Enfield Rifles which would have been replaced c. 1910 ish by the 1908 SMLE.

Hi Shinx,
This is great info as I never Knew he was in the transport section.Would this mean he was involved with logistic supplys??
I suppose it may help me find his records easier. He enlisted in 2/2/14 so this pic must be in training sometime in 1914.When he transfered to the 1/9th he was in C Company(would that be transport)?. I really appreciate all the help as it is bit by bit putting his story together.
                 Thanks again

no, the battalion was split into 4 companies, each would be a fighting unit

Looking at the group photo - you can just make out some terraced houses in the background.

Hi Grimmy,
Its amazeing what fresh eyes can see, it does look like houses in the background. Wouldnt be surprised now if it wasnt taken on Oldham Edge.     Allan ;D
