Hi
My interest is my great uncle, 307166 Pte. Mansel Bowen 2nd/8th Battalion XX The Lancashire Fusiliers, he was born at St. Issells, Pembrokeshire and enlisted at Narberth, Pembrokeshire and was killed in action on 9th October 1917. On 9th October 2/8 LF were serving in 197 Inf Bds of 66 (East Lancashire) Division.

He was taking part in an attack on the area where the Ypres - Roulers railway line crossed the Breedseinde - Paschendaele Road about a mile to the south-west of Paschendaele Village. It was during this attack that he was killed.

Total casulties for the 2/8 LF that day were 35 killed, 213 wounded and 139 missing. Most of the missing were later found to have been wounded and evacuated by other units or else killed.

A few years ago I was told of a certain William Davies a Private of the 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, killed on the same day as Mansel, October 9th 1917 he also came from the same small village in South Wales, and there was talk that William may have been the victim of friendly fire. I've no idea if William and Mansel knew one another or if they died in the same operation. I just wondered if more detailed reports existed regarding the situation on that particular day. Mansel's body was never found. Mansel's name is also spelled incorrectly with two l's i.e. Mansell by the Graves Commission.
