Hello, my name is Valerie and I am trying to find details of my maternal grandfather Fred Garside.
Only info I have is on my mother's birth certificate which states he was a private in the 3rd Manchester Regiment. The time period is 1914 - 1918 war. His wedding certificate in 1914 states he was 33 years old
His wife's name was Catherine Garside (nee Noble). In 1917 his wife lived at 4 Clifton St. Normanton and
their daughter (my mother) was Ann Elizabeth Kathleen Garside.
Any information, or how to find it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Valerie

and welcome to the forum

I will move this thread over to the Great War section and we shall see if we can help you

The 3rd battalion in the great war served as a holding/training battalion, so if he went overseas it would have been with another battalion

cheers

chris

Hi Mack

Wow!
Thank you very much the the very quick reply and extremely useful information.
After 2 years of trying all this info is fantastic.
May I just ask you another question please?
Is there any record of him having another child called Anne Elizabeth Kathleen
who was born on 25th December 1916 and live at 4 Clifton St. Normanton.
Could you please enlighten me as to where all this info came from?
Thank you once again
Blessings

Hi Valerie,

The birth of Anne Elizabeth Kathleen Garside was registered at Wakefield in the first quarter (March) of 1917. Her mother's maiden name was Noble.

Other Garside/Noble children were:

Francis (registered Bradford June 1916) and
Ruth (registered Bradford June 1921).

Thank you very much for all your efforts, I will now try ancestry.
Thanks
Valerie

Hi mack
I have managed to get all fred garside's very colourful war record off.  His marriage cert states he was older by 4 years few untruths told!  I have been looking in the wrong years teach me to spread my searches wider!  I was wondering if you could tell me what the date is on page 93637, it is a memo.  I read it as 24 01 16 but my mother was born on 25 12 16.  Also pages 93623 and 93624.  It is a letter I think to his wife - not sure after reading all this if he is my grandad although he is registered as being my mother's dad.
Also when he enlisted as a soldier would he have had a photo taken?  If so is there any chance of me getting a copy of it and where do I apply for it.  I have no photos of him or his wilfe my mother was brought up by aunts.

Thank you once again for all your help.

Blessings Valerie

the date on the memo is 24-1-16
i cant read most of whats on pages 93623 and 93624,but he seems to say that he will send her money when he gets to france and asks her to take care of herself and the child.
i cant help with a photo, there may have been one published in his local paper.
