Hi all
I have just finished reading 'Birdsong' and was so moved i have decided to try to find out a little more about a relative who was killed in action in 1916.
I was amazed when I found this site after googling 'The Manchester Regiment' and have already found out a host of facts I would never have known.
My GG Uncle was William Edwin Higginbottom of the 19th Battallion. His service number was 17922 and he was killed in action on July 23rd 1916. His name is on the Thiepval Memorial and this is somewhere I now need to visit.
Any help to find out a little more about William would be massively appreciated.
Many thanks
Simon Higginbottom

Hi Simon, and welcome to the forum. First let me apologise for messing up the moving of this enquiry to the right place-it's been a long day  :).
17922 Private Edwin William Higginbottom was actually the 20th Battalion, D Company 13 Platoon and is somewhere on this photograph-but we don't know where.

Some further information for you, He landed in France on the 19th December 1915 and at some stage was posted to the 19th Battalion. His death was assumed to have been on the 23rd July during the Battalions assault on the village of Guillemont. Many of the Men killed that Day have no known grave and are commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

Follow the link here; http://www.themanchesters.org/The%2019th%20bn%20part%201.htm  for a history of the 19th Battalion.
