Hi
My elder brother has recently been given my Grandfathers Military Cross,by my late fathers brother. According to my uncle, Grandad Richard did not like to speak about his time during the great war. Apparently he was a member of the Artists Rifles and the Manchester Regiment and won his MC at the battle of Cambrai. I'm not sure of the year. He was awarded the medal at the Palace theatre in Manchester. That is all i know but i would really like to find out how and why he was awarded such a prestigious honour
I would be very grateful for any information or direction you are able to provide

Thanks

Stotty

Hi Stotty

I am having trouble finding his MC but in the mean time I will move this over to the Great War section and let the rest of the team have a look at it

cheers

Thanks very much for the prompt information. Was it common for a private to become an officer? Is this where the artists rifles come in as they appear on their website to be an officer training regiment? How did the cyclist corps fit in with the Manchester Regiment? Sorry about all the questions but the more information I get the more questions arise.

Thanks again

Hi stotty !

I think you could say that it would not have been so impossible for a man with the right qualities, in the space of 3 years, to be commissioned, sadly promotion was often necessary to replace the fallen  :-\

You may find these links helpful http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artists_Rifles and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Army_Cyclist_Corps
