hi chas

welcome to the group

Medal card of Rimmington, George F
Corps   Regiment No   Rank
Manchester Regiment    1942    Private
South Staffordshire Regiment    34804    Private

have you actually downloaded the card, it does have information on it that may be of use.

judging by his service number he was either a regular army man or in the territorials

cheers

here is the card

it is his index card for his silver war badge ( it means he was injured or wounded while in service)

interestingly enough, there's another card which shows his medal entitlement and some more info!

http://www.tiny.cc/MIC

i think you could do with spending another £3.50 on it mate  ;D

cheers

here we have his other card

here we can see that he was an acting sergeant with the manchesters.

he went to france/flanders on the 5th dec 1914. left the army (quite late in 1919)

he was entitled to the 1914 star, the victory and war medal medals and ( from his other card) the silver war badge

what battalion? it's either the first or the second, my guess here is that he was a regular called back from reserve or held back in a training role, perhaps Roy could look further into the medal rolls to confirm it

no problem chas, thats why we're here ;)

there's loads of information on the mother site, it's still a work in progress and always will be

we've got battalion histories writen by different people and different viewpoints, (not just me) some from the actual soldiers, most from the regiment's written histories and war diaries

http://www.themanchesters.org/

the battalion index

just an update
having done a little detective work it would appear that he married at the holy trinity church hulme and at the time was with the first battalion manchesters in may of 1915
then after seeing my grand mothers birth certificate dated may 1916 it shows his occupation as with the fourth battalion manchesters, which does possibly tally as my father does recall that he spent time in cleethorpes on the humber defences, after looking at the battalion indexes this seems to confirm this
