I am trying to find out more about my grandfather - Thomas Trott - he is listed as a POW on this site.
He died when I was very young.
My father (now almost 80 himself) told me that Thomas was in the Manchester regiment and that he thinks he was a sniper. He remembers that he was captured as a POW and something about working in a salt mine.
Does anyone know about him?
Also, what does SWB stand for?

Hi & welcome to the web site.
SWB =  Silver war Badge   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_War_Badge
Have you any more details on where he lived DOB/anything ?

Hi and as Migky said, Welcome !

Corporal Trott's number was actually 1414. captured on 26th August 1914, which was quite unfortunate as he departed for "the front" on 15th  :-\

Migky's questions are relevant, and sit with your Dad if you get time and grill him  ;D  It's amazing what info they will come up with if encouraged.

It would appear, from what you have said that Thomas survived, and this in it's self is remarkable, so any additional info will assist us.

Found out a bit more - he was born on 15/11/1889 - lived in London (Angel, Islington, above Menzies Pie & Mash shop) after the war and married Louise, who had 2 children. My father (Thomas -again) and his sister (Marilyn).
Thomas senior died in 1958 aged 69.
Family stories say that he was wounded by a piece of shrapnel, a small piece was never recovered from his body, apparently making him blind in one eye.
Would like to know if there are any pics or maybe someone who had heard of him.

He married Louise S Hiscock their wedding is registered in 4th Qtr. of 1930 in the District of Shoreditch.

The story regarding his wounds is consistent with him being awarded the Silver War Badge.

There are a couple of avenues you could follow to look for more information.  News of him and his imprisonment maybe found in local newspapers of the time (and perhaps a photo) I have checked The National Archives online and he does not appear to have been interviewed upon his release, however this Research Guide maybe of interest to you, and includes a link to The International Red Cross.
