I have been unable to find very much information about my great-Grandfather, Samuel Arthur Shelmerdine. Born 30th March 1894 at Blossom Street in Ancoats, Manchester, he served in World War I with the Manchester Regiment, and I understand from family members that he was wounded twice in the arm. I have found a medal roll card which I believe is his: Pte. 4976, Manchester Regiment, Samuel A. Shelmerdine. Also listed on the card is service with the Labour Corps, service number 223935. I have not been able to locate and service or pension record information, so possibly these were lost in the burnt records.

He survived the war and married my great-grandmother in 1919. He was later a tram conductor, tram driver and bus driver. He received a 5-years safe driving award medal in 1955 from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. He passed away 6th February 1960 in Wythenshawe, Manchester. I understand that he informally used his middle name of Arthur.

A thousand thanks to Debs for starting this thread on my behalf.  (She's such a fantastic friend)  .  This is about my great-grandfather, and we know very little about his service other than odd little stories that have come down the family.  Therefore, there is not much to go on from our end.  Many thanks in advance for any advice or information to help flesh out his story.

Spoke to my Grandad today, and he doesn't remember anything about his Dad serving in anything other than the Manchester Regiment, and being wounded twice in the arm. However, he does have Samuel's medals somewhere, and is going to dig them out so I can look at them. However, at this stage we think that the service numbers from the medal card I found relate to the other Samuel Arthur Shelmerdine, and not my great-grandfather. I will update as I find new information. Cheers to all for your efforts.

Hi, this is not going to be much help but wouldn't his service number be on his medals?
Only Samuel Arthur Shelmerdine i could find is living 27 Royds street, Chorlton on Medlock 1927 &1929.
I could not see him at this address 1911/ 1913. Do you have him on the 1911? if so might be worth looking at the absent voters list of any address?
By the way there is a family of Shelmerdine's living at 68 Shirley street Cheetham 1911 & 1913 with a Samuel & an Arthur.

Hi, this is not going to be much help but wouldn't his service number be on his medals?

yes his service number will be on the rim of the round medals (Victory and British War medal) and the back of the 14/15 Star

I'm waiting to get access to his medals, which will hopefully clear a lot of unanswered questions up.  Unfortunately, my grandfather has put them somewhere safe, and now he can't find them.    Well, we've all done that haven't we?  I know I have.  Will keep you informed when I find more.

I can confirm the Royd Street address is the correct man.  That's my great-grandad's address, and it was address at some point during the First World War as his soldiers prayer book (which doesn't have his service number in) gives that address.

Hi all

Jim grandad has found his fathers Medals and the number is 4976.
In other info, on SWARM forums, it doesn't look like he got the 14/16 stars, but he did get the other Medals.

hi debs, in short no,
127 men were listed with this number in the British army, 3 in the Manchester's, different battalions i would say.also  there are 18  shelmerdine,s listed  in the manchester regiment and its the 1914-15 star.
his samuel related to a sidney and william shelmerdine from cadishead.?  enjoy  tonyrod

Hi Debbie, the Sydney and William Shelmerdine's mentioned by Tony are covered on page 338 and 339 of a District at War (which I know you've got!). It's not a very common name.
