Tyke

Hi,

I am trying to research my paternal grandfather Pte Joseph Caldwell.  He was born 16 Oct 1898 and enlisted at Horwich on 14 Oct 1916.  Whilst still in UK he mentioned places in England such as Prees Heath, which I think is in Cheshire; Kinmel Park near Abergaveny and somewhere near Barnetby in N Lincs where he used to collect coal for the camp from a railway station. I guess these were training camps.

Not sure when he deployed to France but he apparently spent some time as a sniper.  He was badly wounded in chest and leg by shrapnel I am guessing around Mar/April 1918 by a shell landing in his trench as he walked in file. It killed a lot of his section. A telegram his mother received on 8 May 1918 improves his condition from VSI to SI but confirms his regimental number as 60561 and from 2nd Manchesters.

He spent a lot of time in 3rd West General Hospital, Newport in Monmouthshire as was discharged on 17 Apr 1919.  He had 2 medals one of which was the Victory Medal, not sure of other one.

If anyone could fill in some gaps it would be fanstastic as I am trying to help my dad learn about his own father.

I will put up a post another day with regards to my maternal grandfather who also served in the Manchester Regiment in WW1.

Hi Tyke and welcome, I am sure someone will be along with information for you shortly.
I just wanted to let you know that Kinmell Park is in North Wales close to Rhyl.  I am not certain but believe there is still an Army camp there, I know there was just a few years ago.  Try a Google search on Kinmell Park Army Camp.  I have an Aunt (aged 92) living in Kinmell Bay.
There is probably no connection however I thought I would let you know that my Maternal Grandfather who died before I was born was Josiah Caldwell born about 1876 and at age 5 was living at 1 William St. Droylsden Lancashire.  I have not done any family history research but my half brother in Australia and a second cousin in Scotland have so I will see if they can make any connection to your Paternal Grandfather.
