Hi Judy

Welcome to the forum

How wonderful that Issy is being remembered! We recently added some new pages for the regiment's VCs and of course Issy was in there

Please let us know how it went and if we can assist at all....

Hello Chris,
Thanks for the welcome.
There is one thing you may be able to help with.
Do you have the EXACT wording for his citation? There are a couple of versions on the web, but I don't know which is the correct one. I'll be putting it on the Programme handout so would like it to be right as many hang on to programmes as a keepsake.

Hi Judy and Welcome to our Forum!

Here is the entry from The London Gazette Issue 29272 Published on the 20th August 1915 (8374 Supplement to the London Gazette, 23 August 1915) Page 2 Click here to view

It says:

" No. 168 Acting Corporal Issy Smith, 1st Battalion, The Manchester Regiment.

For most conspicuous bravery on 26th April 1915, near Ypres, when he left his Company on his own initiative and went well forward towards the enemy's position to assist a severely wounded man, whom he carried a distance of 250 yards into safety, whilst exposed the whole time to heavy machine-gun and rifle fire.

Subsequently Corporal Smith displayed great gallantry, when the casualties were very heavy, in voluntarily assisting to bring in many more wounded men throughout the day, and attending to them with the greatest devotion to duty regardless of personal risk."

Hope the day goes well, we'll look forward to seeing the photos!

What splendid photographs.  Many thanks for letting us share them with you.  Obviously a great occasion and a fitting tribute to Issy Smith.
