hiya robbie
all you need to apply for his service records,is your nana and grandfathers marriage certificate, that should be enough

mack ;D

Wendi

Stop!  :-X all this talk of necessary certificates to get his service record  :D

He died in service so you do not have to provide any certificates to get his Service Record, just pay the dosh  ;) unless your Grandma is still alive, she would be able to obtain it without the fee.

This tells you all about how to: http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/AboutDefence/WhatWeDo/Personnel/ServiceRecords/MakingARequestForInformationHeldOnThePersonnelRecordsOfDeceasedServicePersonnel.htm

Wendi  :)

PS. If you wanted to get his birth certificate for family history research or something these are the details you would need.

thanks guys.
i had found out or thought i had that my grandad was born in 1904 in lewisham.
but did not know the date as it lists it as a quarter, and it appeared to be rigistered in september.
so thank you for confirming that for me.
i havent done much this week as i have been diagnosed with pneumonia and seem to be affected in waves by it and have been sleeping a lot.
my granma died a few years ago.
she only opened up to my mum about her dad on rare occasions. she never remarried. i think it hurt her to talk about her bert.
my mum is a massive arsenal fan, apparently her dad was, so she carried on the tradition.
i believe my grandad had medals issued but i have recently discovered my dad stole them. he sold them. it hurt my grandma and my mum. i am there fore looking to try and get replacements to help heal an old wound for my mum.
i am now also interested in finding out if my grandad had siblings. hopefully i will be able to find out more.
a lot of the relevant paperwork has been lost over the years.
strange as this sounds if i get hold of the medals again i will give them to my mum. i suspect she may bury them with her mum as they were hers and berts.

mack

hiya robbie.
it will be impossible for you to find his medals, because WW2 medals were not named, thats the bad news, the good news is that you can pick up WW2 campaigne medals fairly cheaply.

mack ;D

Hi robbie !

I do hope you start to feel better soon !

The only real way to find out more about the Fellowes family is either to know Bert's parents names or get his birth certificate to find them out.

You can do that online via this link http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ so you don't even have to leave your sick bed ! and in 5 to 7 days you should know your great grandparents names.
