11TH BATTALION ACTION ON 5/11/1917
« on: August 26, 2010, 04:34:46 PM »
Hi All
I am reserching the army service of my great uncle, 41300 Pvt William Riley who was serving with the 11 Battalion Manchester Regiment at the time he was killed in action during WW1 on the 5/11/1917.
In particular i am trying to find out the place and possibly the action he was involved in at the time of his death.
I have already downloaded his service records and found his burial place in loos cemetery.however these do not give any clues as to the place he was actually killed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards Dave.

on the 5th November 1917, the 11th battalion were in the front line on the north west of Lens

the war diary isn't very helpful, it looks like what had become a 'normal' day in the trenches, i have attached a copy for you. click the image for bigger

hiya dave.
only one other man was killed on this date, who was in the 11th manchesters,he was pte 24454 john o,brien.military medalist,he and william are buried side by side in loos cemetery, there was nothing happening on this date, which suggests that they were probably both killed togethor by shell fire, but we will probably never know.
