Can onyone please help me ??
??? I am trying to find my Granddads regiment, he came from Wigan born 22/12/1886 in Hr Ince-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Lancashire.
I was told that hes was in the army WW1 and think i heard storys that he was in India.
I can't find him on Pension records, Medel Records, i dont know his army No or regiment.
Can anyone PLEASE HELP. I have exhausted all other channels even going to the Army Musem at Preston.
The only other thing open to me is KEW in London but i have been told that the chances of finding anything is almost nill due to burnt records.
You are my last resort.
PLEASE HELP. :'(

hi donewalking

and welcome to the group

one of our first ports of call are the medal index cards at Kew, these are available on line. now the problem we have now is which Richard Prescott do we want

http://www.tiny.cc/medalindex

there are a few possibles, a couple of south lancs and a few manchesters

if i had to guess, for a wigan lad i say this one

Description
Medal card of Prescott, Richard
Corps   Regiment No   Rank
Manchester Regiment    203842    Private
Date    1914-1920

only because he has a 5th battalion number and the 5th came from wigan

but without any further proof  ???

approx 70% of WW1 service records were lost in the blitz

it's very difficult, we are really just guessing, without any documents or medals or whatever you could be looking at a long search at Kew without any guarantee of success :(

wigan may not have absent voters registers like most areas, their AVLs may be in the general voters registers, with an A next to their name,to signify an absent voter.
