ladysmith

Vera - The 1st Battalion South Lancs were in the campaign to relieve Ladysmith. They saw action at Venters Spruit 20-23/1/1900 and two of the eight companies were at Spion Kop on the 24th. In the Tugela Heights during the final push to relieve Ladysmith they were in action at the Colenso Koppies 21/2/1900, Wynne's Hill on the 22nd and 23rd and Pieters Hill (the final battle before the relief) on the 27th. Those men seconded to the 5th Mounted Infantry were in action at the defence of Fort Itala when the Boers re-invaded northern Natal. Are you looking for a specific man who served in the batalion?

Vera,

An excellent and informative read would be Red Roses on the Veldt by Lt Col John Downham, former Regt Sec for the Queen's Lancashire at Regimental Headquarters, Fulwood Preston. The book could be sourced through the HQs or Amazon (it sounds like I'm promoting it..LOL)

The book would I feel tell you all you need to know.....

Andy,
"What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
Only the monstrous anger of the guns.
Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle
Can patter out their hasty orisons."
