pte 2393 john clarke morten wrote to his mother on 7th june 1915 from the support trenches to tell her that there were only four of the stockport lads left,that were not wounded in the bayonet charge on the 4th june,they were ptes denby,sykes,green and himself,pte sykes was on ration duties,so he wasnt involved in the attack,on 29th june,he wrote another letter to his mother,dear mother,i told you in a previous letter that douglas green was all right,ime sorry to say that the day after i wrote[7th june],he was sent on a errand with another fellow and they never returned,they found his body in a gully.
