Hi,I'm trying to find out some information on my Great Grandfather,Private John Carter who was in the 5th Ardwick Volunteer-3rd Service Company of the Manchester Regiment. From what I'm told he served in the Boer War and was killed in early 1900 and I'm told he is commemorated in the Ardwick Green Barracks. What I would like are his army number, his MIC (If possible) and also where he was killed.Any information gratefully received.
Brian Carter.

Hi Brian

If you go to this link in our photo section, the second photo down is the memorial at Ardwick Green barracks. Your Great Grandfather,Private John Carter is listed on it and on the third picture. Click on the picture to make it bigger and feel free to take a copy.

On the memorial he is down as the 2nd service company.

Hi Brian - The only man of the Manchester Regiment called Carter who died in the Boer War is listed with the incorrect initial T. Discrepancies with initials in references are not uncommon especially in this case when the Victorian handwritten T and J were often very similar. The listing shows him as:

3758 Pte. T. (sic) Carter, 1/Manchester Regiment, died of pneumonia at Charlestown 2/8/1900. He was originally buried at Charlestown but was subsequently reinterred at Newcastle No. 2 Cemetery. These locations are in northern Natal. As is often the case no individual grave marker survives. His religion is shown as CofE.

This is presumably your man. He would have been attached to the 1st battalion. He was entitled to the Queen's South Africa Medal with clasp Defence of Ladysmith.
