My grandfather William Whitlam, service number 18081, is on the back row second in from the left. I have his service record from Kew, but no idea how he won the MM, or was mentioned in despatches. Can anyone help?

sphinx

David,

His MM was in the London Gazette of 24.1.1919 and the Bn. war diary states his was one of 7 MM's awarded for exceedingly gallant work in  the recent raid on 8.8.1918 from Canove di Sotto & Gordon Trench in Italy.

His no was actually 18061

Dear Spinx,

Thank you for that info, I have been trying for years, but without success! I am sorry I typed his service number  wrong by mistake. Do not suppose you have any idea about the MIB which is dated 18th April, 1918.

sphinx

David,

No, no records of such awards out there I am afraid, other than the date.

Sphinx,

Thanks for the info you did have. It has advanced my search no end.

Cheers,

David
