I shall have a look at a higher resolution version on the CD-ROM and try to pick out Lance Corporal T. Cartman, later Captain Thomas Cartman MC of 17th Manchesters (see the thread about him and his recently-discovered scrapbook). Am I right in assuming that these chaps were probably the very first Pals to enlist?

As I've found before it's not easy to identify individuals from a greoup photoi, even when you know what they look like. My bset guess on Tom Cartman is that he may be the Lance-Corporal standing third from the right on the second row at the end of a line of seated NCOs and officers with another Lance Nike standing next to him, but who knows?

L/Cpl 6327 Herbert Williamson is sat in the front row with the drum and bugle (with stripe) Also member of Bugle Band.  Came from Heywood.
