Hi

The plot thickens with my relative. I now have a death certficate, his occupation of is stated as warehouseman which isnt eather shattering, but it also states ex private 12th Manchesters. The death was notified by his brother who was in the 18th Manchesters so I would have thought he wouldnt have got it mixed up. SO I now have the folllowing references to the
SWB
the 17th
and the 12th

if it helps in anyway he dies on the 11/8/1919 of a heart attack and he was 25!

Im really hoping somebody out there can shed some light on this

regards

Steve

Hi Steve

Is it possible that the way the 12 is written on the death certicate, the 2 could be a 7.
Only a thought, with the information that Kingo gave you and the newspaper cutting all points to the 17th

Hi
I did think that myself but it definatly states ex Private 12th Manchesters, and I wouldnt have thought his brother would have got it wrong he was the informant at the death. It does state on his medal card in the remarks it does state Class Z 25/3/1919 could he have been a reserve for the 12th

the 17th manchesters were reduced to a training cadre on 19-6-18,then they were absorbed by the 13th battalion on 30-7-18,then the 13th battalion was absorbed by the 9th battalion on 13-8-18,some men would have gone to other manchester battalions,it may not have been his brother frank who placed the obit notice in the paper and they didnt know he had changed battalions

William Carter trained in XV Pln of 17th Bn.  The BWM/VM roll shows he served overseas with the 13th Bn but I suspect 17th Bn was missed off in error. The 1914/15 Star Roll says he disembarked on 7 November 1915.  William later served with the South Wales Borders until he was transferred to Reserve Class Z on 25/03/1919.  He had been hospitalised in August 1917 with  pyrexia and separately Haematuria in May 1918 - both with 13th Bn.
William Carter died from Aortic disease & Heart failure on 11 August 1919. As there is no record of VDH in the records we cannot show that this was a consequence of service.  He is buried at Southern Cemetery.
