Private Ernest Armsbey's great-nephew, my Deputy Head at school (soon to retire!), would be delighted to see his uncle depicted in the Book of Honour. Could I be cheeky and ask if anyone has a good definition version of the photograph that I could copy and perhaps include as part of his retirement present? He has accompanied me on all 17 of my school battlefield tours, during which time we have visited Ernest Armsbey's grave at Carnoy Cemetery twice.

Hi Mark, there is only one Armsbey, E on the CWGC (19th Bn) so this must be him. The City Battalions has an Armsby, E 12285 (same battalion, but different spelling and service no). I assume he is the same man? Private Armsby, E. served in the 19th Battalion, D Company, 14 Platoon. His CWGC details are as follows:

Name: ARMSBEY
Initials: E
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Manchester Regiment
Unit Text: 19th Bn.
Date of Death: 31/05/1916
Service No: 12259
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: H. 21.
Cemetery: CARNOY MILITARY CEMETERY

I'll ask one of the members if they can email you a copy of D Company, Platoon 14, 19th Battalion.

Cheers
Pete

That's undoubtedly him, first on the right, front row. He's the spitting image of my colleague's dad. As I say we have visited the grave at Carnoy on a couple of occasions but I don't think that the family has a surviving photo of him. How did you identify him?

Thanks very much. I'll use the posted version if necessary, but if anyone does have a higher resolution image of the picture which they could e-mail to me, I'd be very grateful. My friend is planning to viist the grave again with his wife this Summer and the photo would make a very fitting surprise retirement present.
