on 4th sept 1914,william,cecil page left his job as a designer at william briggs+co,and enlisted in the 18th manchesters and assigned to B.coy,he moved to france with his battalion on 8th november 1915,he was wounded in the left shoulder on 10th july 1916 during the heavy fighting on the somme,he was evacuated through the 98th field ambulance to the 21st CCS and finally to the convalescent depot,in 1917 he spent a short time in hospital,suffering from trench foot,he was later posted to D.coy,20th manchesters,on 6th october 1918,he was taken prisoner and sent to germany.
the records office wrote to his father asking if he had recieved any correspondence from his son,on 30th december 1918 his father sent them a post card that he had recieved,stating that he was in the POW hospital at quedlinburg,on 20-1-19 he wrote and asked them if his son was likely to be coming home soon because he had recently lost his only other son on 11th august 1918 in mesopotamia,and they were anxious to have him back home again

a communication from the commandant of quedlinburg POW hospital has been recieved at this office,your son died at 5.30am on 6th december 1918 at this hospital,and buried in quedlinburg central cemetery
