VICENZA1988

 Hi,I'm Mick.
I live in Liverpool but work in Manchester,so have devloped links now with both cities.
As unknown to me until recently, so have earlier generations of my family.
My grandad born in the Isle of Man and raised in Liverpool, and lived there all his life(except for a couple of years in the trenches).
As the Liverpool and the Mancheters amalgamated in 53(i think) I thought obviously he was a Liverpool regiment soldier.
How wrong was I.actually Manchesters.
He actually grew up in Laburnam Street(now Salford),not far from Liverpool street as it happens.
It his him who I need info on, so will be asking questions in the very near future.

thanks for having me ,Mick

Thanks Timberman,
I think the best place to start is put a post in the great war section as I have My grandads number and MIC.

Hi Mick,
Welcome to the site, The amalgamation of The Kings (Liverpool)  Regiment and the Manchester Regiment was September 1958 at Warley Barracks, Brentwood.
Laburnum Street still exists today, (Manchester A to Z, page 77/ M4/5) it runs parallel to Langworthy Road between Spring Gardens and Wall Street next to Langworthy Park ,Salford, which in your grandfather's time would have been Highfield Reservoir.
Take care,
George.

thanks George,
don't suppose you know if any of the old schools in the locality still exist.
May eb able to source some info on grandad and his brother.

Dear Moderator,

I like your crawler message: "......WE DON'T BITE". It tickles me. What would you say if you are bitten instead? Hehehehe.

Hi Tony,

Actually I have been a member for quite sometimes now. You can read some of my posts in "The Borneo Headhunters". I was browsing through the forum when your crawler message caught my attention. My apology. I couldn't resist having a go at it.

I was a member of the Malaysian Rangers, a direct descendent of the Iban Trackers and Sarawak Rangers who had served well with The Manchester Regiment in the 50s in Malaya. I retired in 1992 and now lives in Taiping, Perak, West Malaysia.

Nice to know you.

Hi Mick again,
Offhand I cannot say which schools still exist in that area but I have asked one of my nieces who lives in Monton, Eccles to make some enquiries on your behalf, I have also asked her to let me have the current address of the Education Offices of Salford so that there again you might be able to contact the Archive section if it still exists. Otherwise the only line I could suggest would be to get in touch with the Archivist at the Salford Local Studies Centre, Peel Park, Salford where loads of Local and Family History materials are held. You may also find that they will possibly have photographs of that area that you could browse.
Will be in touch again shortly.
Cheers,
George.

Me back again Mick,
I haven't had any info from my niece as yet but I was going through some old map extracts I have on disc for Salford and found one covering the area of Langworthy Road and Laburnum Street - The nearest school could well have been the one on the southern side of Liverpool Street between St. Ambrose Church and the Wesleyan Methodist Church and backing on  to Blodwell Street - it may have been St Ambrose School, I cannot remember, but like the Methodist church the school is long gone I believe.
Cheers,
George.
