Hi, new to this so here goes. I'm trying to research family tree & having a bit of trouble. Eventually found birth certificate for my grandmother born in limerick in July 1894 & on the civil birth record the father is named as George David Farquhar and occupation Sgt Manchester Regt. Mother is named as Catherine Fitzgerald so not sure if married or maiden name had to be given. Address is New Barracks in the Parish/District of Limerick No.4 in Co.Limerick. I don't know if there is any information about him anywhere else & I have no idea of where born or what year etc. I do know they had two other children George & Mary but where born etc no info so far. Can anybody help or any suggestions ? Thank You

George's service record should be at The National Archives in Kew, available for personal visit or obtainable via a researcher.

You don't mention your grandmothers name it wasn't Eileen by any chance was it?

Thanks for advice about records. I have no idea what battalion etc he was in or why he was in Ireland. Hopefully records at Kew will give me some clues about him because I don't know his date/place of birth etc or any details about his wife Catherine.

My grandmothers name by the way was Janet Irene Farquhar so sorry not Eileen.

hiya angie.
sgt farquhar was born in 1865,he died at woolwich,kent,in 1899,aged 34
his daughter janet,irene,married john grogan at hastings,in 1918

Hi Mack,

Thank you so much for this information it will help me with my search. Janet Irene & John Brogan are my mum's parents & she is now 84 herself. She doesn't know much about her mum's family so this is another piece of the puzzle. We do know that his widow Catherine ( mum's gran) did remarry & worked as a cook in some big houses. I'm very grateful for your help.

Hi Angie !

Just talking out loud really...... there are 2 girls, Mary Farquhar, age 10, & Eileen Farquhar, age 6, on the 1901 Census living in "The Convent & Orphanage" in Croydon. Both are listed as being born in Blackheath, Kent. I can not find birth records for either of them that match the info.......

The closest marriage I can find for a Catherine Farquhar is 1903 in Newcastle Upon Tyne.....

just suggestions to keep in mind !!!

Thanks for the interest. The info in mack's reply seems correct regarding birth/death of George and the children were Mary,George & Janet. Catherine Farquhar (nee Fitzgerald/the mum) remarried and became Catherine Douglas but don't know when or where or what happened to children and her when he died. My mum says that her mum (Janet) always told her she went to a convent school but England or Ireland we don't know. Don't know when she came to England but do know she (Janet) married in Hastings in 1918.Know nothing of Catherine Fitzgerald as she was and if she was Irish or if just happened to be in Ireland with husband when she had Janet. Will keep digging & Mum knows some later history about Mary and George. Thanks for taking an interest. I must admit it starts to get a bit addictive when you start delving !

I just posted about the girls 'cos, Eileen ~ Irene $:-\$ well you never know, Census aren't known for being precise ! worth keeping in mind...

I would suggest that you obtained George's death certificate, just out of interest, if you have ï¿½7 to spare. It might be sparse on info, but sometimes, just sometimes, they hold gems of info.

Hi All,

Just an update really. Have sent off for death certificate to see if it can help me with place of birth because at dead end at the moment. Don't know where he was born & can't find marriage records either for him & Catherine. Tried looking on census for them aswell but no joy! Maybe married/lived in Ireland for longer. Will try to get down to National Archives at some point to see if any records there. Any clues for best places to look would be very much appreciated.

Hi there,

Have obtained death certificate for George who sadly died of TB and Diarrhoea & exhaustion. Not nice !!! Listed as Pensioner (?) 1st Manchester Regiment.
No place of birth given so no luck there and still unable to find his marriage to Catherine Fitzgerald. One bit of puzzle solved though,his son also called George(age

was still boarding at the address where he died 2 years later & now have suspicion that Wendi is right and that Mary & Eileen are actually his sisters Mary and Janet Irene (my grandmother) who was brought up in a convent so story fits that bit too.
Cannot find their mother Catherine Farquhar (nee Fitzgerald) anywhere on census though. Suspect that she was working in service somewhere but don't know much more. I do know she remarried at some point and became Catherine Douglas (name when died) & my mum seems to remember that she was also known as Mrs Stewart(Stuart?) when she visited her at work in the 1930's when she was a little girl but doesn't know why. The mystery deepens & is quite frustrating at the moment. I wonder if there would be any sort of records for George at the National Archives. Can anyone help or any advice/suggestions ? This is starting to drive me nuts !! Thanks for everyone's help so far.

I am new to this site and was delighted to read about your efforts and all the emails that people have sent to you. If i can help here goes.
My mother in law was born Kathleen Irene Mary Stammers
Her father Ernest William Stammers married
Mary Catherine Annie Farquhar and lived in sussex, Bexhill.
Her father was George David Farquhar and her mother was Catherine Fitzgerald.
She was born in Ireland and baptised @ St John the Baptist, Kinsale, Cork and was born on 15/05/1891.
I have a little 'invite' to a funeral from way back and it is for a Catherine Douglas who died on 12.8.1946 aged 74 years and is buried at Brockley Cemetary in South London.
My mother in law sadly passed away this year but I can remember her telling us about someone in her family who was a cook for some wealthy people and although she couldn't read or write managed to keep her job due to her talents as a cook. She also remembers her parents being very friendly with a coal merchant and his wife. I have photographs of Mary Catherine Farquhar on horseback, sitting on a car at a picnic, getting into a car outside a large hotel getting ready for a trip to Eastbourne for the day. She was obviously a very good horsewoman because she seemed to be waiting with other riders to start a race or dressage perhaps. I also have a photo of a family wedding that was probably taken during the first world war because there were several people there in uniform, including my husbands grandfather and Mary Catherine..
I have only just started to look into their history having spent a lot of time looking into the Stammers family history. Any stories on these people would be greatly appreciated.
