Previous Military service
« on: November 17, 2009, 06:58:56 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I have a question about my Great Grandfather William Westerside 7816. He joined the Manchester Regiment in 1902 at the age of 16. On his Attestation form one of the questions asks if he has had any previous Military service. He answers yes with the 6th Manchester Regiment.
Would this have been a Militia?

Thanks heaps Brad

Hi Brad

it could have been with the militia or the 6th Battalion (territorials) based at Stretford Road, Hulme, Manchester

Chris was the 6th Bn around in 1902?

Wendi.
It is all very confusing, differing between regular army, volunteer, territorial and militia battalions.

6th Manchesters in Stretford Road were originally the 6th Lancashire Rifle Volunteers in 1859, then in 1888 were retitled 4th Volunteer Battalion Manchester Regiment and then in 1908 retitled 6th Territial Battalion Manchester Regiment.

The 4th Militia Battalion Manchester Regiment was renumbered 6th Militia Battalion in 1900.

Brad must have a closer look at the attestation document to see if there are any better clues.  Also whereabouts did his Grandfather live?  That certainly could have a bearing.

Your not wrong about that Robert  ;D  I have only just grasped the Pals Bn's numbering system and now this  ::)

I really am going to have to pay better attention !

Thanks for the explanation

Hi Everyone,

Thank you all for your help.
I have attached the part of his attestation form with the information on(hope it helps).
My Great Grandfather's age on the attestation form is 18 years 4 months but in fact he was only 16.
He may have stretched the truth a little. How old did you have to be to be in the militia?
Thanks again
Brad
