Lt Arthur Evans Townsend

Lt Townsend was the 1st of the 18th battalions officers to die-as the result of an accident with a grenade at Cardonette on 25/11/1915 involving Sgt Perkins and Pte Bagnall. He died as a result of his injuries the next day and is buried in St Pierre cemetery Amiens.
Looking at his medal card it states that he was previously 10848 Sgt Townsend and checking the London Gazette shows that he was gazetted  Lt in 1915. Assuming that it is the same person and that he was 28 years of age-could he have had previous military service ?.

hiya andy.
arthurs parents john+sarah,ann,were prosperous enough to employ a servant.
they originally lived at 46 cottenham st,chorlton on medlock before moving to west didsbury.
arthur was probably commissioned because he had a good education,and came from a good background.
i cant find any previous military background,but you never know

Hiya Bernard-If you look in the list of firms and institutions there is only one A E Townsend who went to the Rifle Brigade and there is a medal card for him. I was wondering if it was him.
