Hi I don't know if this is the right place to post this ,but I've just been on a family history forum and found this -Home for battered memorial sought -it's been found abandoned in a scrap yard in Greater Manchester and contains the name of 60 men from around the Manchester area that were killed .Can anything be done on here about it ?

Second attempt - I am surprised that there has been no apparent response to this query so far - I would imagine that The Museum of The Manchester Regiment at Ashton would indeed be very interested in this item.
Which site was this information on please??
George.

Hi George ,I found it on the British Genealogy site ,I know it as the Brit Gen forum .It looks as though the original item was part of the BBC News .

The BBC article doesn't really help to place the memorial. I've sent an email to the War Memorial Trust to see if they can provide a list of casualties on the memorial. If we have the names we'll be able to work out the common denominator, e.g. if they all worked for the same company or came from the same area.

The BBC article mentions Trafford Park. I worked at GEC in Trafford Park for 25 years (Metrovicks at the time of the Great War). The works were gradually closed and demolished in the late 90's/early 2000's and the works war memorial is now at St. Anthony's Centre Eleventh Street, The Village, Trafford Park, Greater Manchester, M17 1JF. If the war memorial was a works memorial, which is likely, perhaps St Anthony's is the appropriate place for it?

Cheers

Of the 49 names listed above-I can find 34 of them listed with the same Surname and Initials in the Co-Operative Wholesale Society's Roll of honour. Surely more than just a coincidence  ???.

Make that 37. One of the men listed Pte Michael McCormick is annotated against his name "Killed".

Pte Michael McCormick, 1st Bn Lancashire Fusiliers. KIA 25/4/1915 aged 36. Commemorated on the Helles Memorial.

Its Got to be a Co-op Memorial !.

There's some speculation on t'other forum that they were shopfitters working for the Co-op. Sgt Joseph Mooney, 21st Bn KIA 19/4/1917 gives his occupation as a French Polisher. Can't fit a shop out without a french polisher to buff it up after you have finished   ;).

b.hutchinson was 2/Lt bert hutchinson,he was a short hand typist, lived the george hotel, radcliffe, his family later moved to 160 water st,radcliffe
pte 30870 peter hulland[not hullard]lived at 8 union st,clitheroe
pte 235974 ernest leach lived at 42 stowell st,weaste
6063 michael mccormick lived at 5 queens rd,littleborough
771 daniel o.brien was from manchester

theres no such name as laventry in any census or military records

its definately a co.op memorial,BUT who is it honouring,if it was a single works memorial, then it must have been a huge place,49 dead from one works is a lot of men.

i wonder if the co.op have any records from that period,it might be worth e.mailing them, ime certain they will be pleased about it being found
