I have discovered your fantastic website, whilst researching our family tree and I am really impressed by the knowledge and dedication of your members, which leads me to my request for help.

My Great grandfather Charles Henry Shore was born 5th June 1889 and spent his entire life in Rochdale. I beleive that he was a general labourer. He was married to Florence and died December 1959.

I think that as a Rochdalian he joined the Manchester Regiment although not certain. Would it be possible to shed a some light on his war record and where he may have fought

Can you assist with my enquiry.

Thanks
Ninnycar

Hi ninnycar and Welcome  ;D

As timberman said, there is no guarantee that your GGrandfather actually did join the Manchester Regiment unless any family members can corroborate that for you.  (For example there is someone with exactly the same name who served in The Lancashire Fusiliers  :-\ )

However the good news is that all the Service Records for soldiers with the surname of "S" survived the German Bombings of 1940 and are intact at The National Archives in Kew.

With regard to isolating his record you will need to visit Kew, or employ a researcher.  (Our man at Kew is themonsstar, a member of this forum) Alternatively you will need paitence  :D as Ancestry is currently uploading digitalised copies of the records, but they have not got to S yet.......

Hope that helps to some extent !

Rumours are that the next batch of service records will be uploaded to A******y on the 11th November. I will believe it when it happens  ::)

Your response to my enquiry has been fantastic, however I have now got new information. The surname is spelt Shore and most importantly I now have a picture of Charles Henry Shore in his uniform. I will have access to my scanner on Wednesday and will upload the picture which will hopefully assist your goodselves in identifying his regiment.

Sorry for the duff info with the incorrect spelling of the surname.

Thanks
Ninnycar

Thanks for loading the photo of my GGrandfather. To clarify to all who have read this thread and may be confused as to the spelling of the surname, as I was.

His name was Charles Henry Shore born in Rochdale 5th June 1889.

Apologies for the confusion
