Hi
am trying to find out why my husbands Grand Father received the Military Medal in ww1.The record in the London Gazette 24 Jan 1919 states in brackets (Mile end).As far as we are aware he only ever lived in Bovingdon in Hertfordshire.Could the mile end reference refer to something else,

MMROLL

Hi Julie Iam the compiler of the MM ROLL and may be able to help.Firstly the town name after the entry is normally the soldiers town of residence not necessarily his home town.Ifrequently find discepancies including L/G for MM giving one town, then his Bar to MM another. There are also differences found between CWGC entries  eg for BORN,and those in  SOLDIERS DIED. So dont worry too much about that. The London Gazette of 24.1.19 relates largely to awards for The Battle of AMIENS 8.8.18 and the rest of August 1918. Hope this is of some use.  HOWARD
