1st, the best thing to do is go on the ww2 pow's section on the forum, rafboy (Cliff) is the man to ask.

2nd, this worked for me, but it was 10yrs ago, ring the British embassy in Burma and see if they will lay a wreath and take a pic or try the commonwealth war graves commission (www.cwgc.org) cost me 25 quid
its worth asking the cwgc if mr stanton was re buried some of the lads were initialy buried in sonkria and reburied in thanbyuzat in dec.1945

3rd, on the ww2 pow section have a look at Arthur Barbers story, Cliff has put some pix on that may interest you, there is also a piece from Mr Arthur Lane thats worth reading it aint a pretty story but it needs to be told. Arthur Barber was my great uncle. (3523637 drummer 1st bttn d 28/5/43, also in thanbyuzat)

Can I just say that the stories of these brave men is heartbreaking ..... and you will shed many tears at the injustice of it all ! so you need to be prepared before you go further ...... we'd love to help you ..... you may already know a lot of Maxwells story - so before we tread on old ground  - can you tell us how much you already know ?

Hi Liz, sorry I could not answer sooner, I was away for the weekend at a POW reunion and remembrance service for the men who were held on Taiwan and their families.  Seven former POW's attended plus about 30 family members.

If you have followed up tobo's 3rd piece of information you will have found my photos including the two groups of POW's taken in Singapore.  Let me know if you would like them sent to you direct at a higher resolution which will enable you to blow up the photos enough for you to see the men clearly so that you can compare any family photos you may have.

Sorry I cannot help with his Japanese POW record card it is one of several I do not have but it will be available from the National Archive at Kew.  The information on searching at Kew is on the Forum under POW Record Cards.

The Regimental Museum at Ashton Under Lyne has available a document that you may like to get hold off, the reference is MR1/3/1/18 Title is First Battalion The Manchester Regiment Malaya, Thailand, Burma 1939~1945.  The Museum contact details are on their web site at:

Thanbyuzayat Allied War Cemetery, Burma. c. 30 January 1955. Situated approximately sixty five kilometres south of Moulmein, Thanbyuzayat was the starting point of the Burma-Thailand railway constructed by the Japanese using prisoner of war (POW) labour over the period September 1942 to October 1943. It was the Japanese Administration Headquarters for POWs in Burma, and also served as a base hospital for seriously ill POWs from up country railway camps from October 1942 until June 1943, when Allied air raids forced the Japanese to abandon the site. At the conclusion of the war in August 1945, the graves of those POWs who died during the construction and maintenance of the railway, between Thanbyuzayat and Nieke, were transferred to this cemetery (except Americans who were repatriated). Also buried here are those who died of illness or were executed by the Japanese at Victoria Point Mergui, Tavoy and Moulmein in Burma, between June and September 1942. The total number of burials is 3,771, including 1,335 Australians. The other two Allied War Cemeteries are located in Thailand: Chungkai 1,740 burials; Kanchanaburi 6,982 (including 1,362 Australians).

What a wonderful group of people you all are - the desire to help is commendable to you all. As I have mentioned before thank you from the bottom of my heart fro the information you are sending me - I shed quite a few tears when I saw he POW card.....feelings of sorrow to anger to love.......thank you!
