Andrew

Hello members,
I was wondering if anybody can help me.My grandad William Andrew Murphy (1809, 1st Battalion)told my dad he was mentioned in dispatches but we don't know why.My father has done some research and we think he may have been in No.4 company as my grandad told my dad that his company had to carry duckboards near or at Neuve Chapelle and that the next day was wounded whilst attacking German trenches (12/03/1915).He was wounded in no mans land and had to crawl back to his trenches. He was shipped home soon afterwards. My dad can't remember what his rank was.He was at one time a drummer for the regimental band.My dad remembers seeing a bayonet wound in the palm of grandads hand which he recieved in hand to hand combat. My grandad also stated that at one time there were only 10 men left in his company who had originally sailed from India with him.Any other information on him would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

Hello Harribobs and timberman,
My dad thinks grandad was born in Seacombe,Liverpool(i hope i've spelt that right) 28/07/1891 but his memory isn't what it use to be.
Thanks Andrew,
p.s i have a picture of grandad on a postcard with other soldiers dressed in white tropical uniform surrounding a Franciscan monk(grandad was a Roman Catholic). When i have time i will try to post it to the website.I only have a laptop so will ask a friend who has a computer how to do it.

Hi Andrew

Here is his Medal index card.

Looks like he was one of the originals with a 1914 star and a Silver war badge. But I will post some of his SR for . It looks like he joined in 1900 then was discharged ??? but then joined the RAMC TA with a service number 7335091 1920-1021 ???

my connection tonight is dreadful... and i'm having problems downloading these images

but that is certainly a silver war badge card so he was discharged through wound or sickness

Wow!
Thankyou you very much guys, i know he was discharged because of a very nasty wound. My dad told me that he got hit in the abdomen area(i won't go into the gory details but after surgery he had a very bad limp).I didn't know he was in the RAMC but dad remembers he was in the home guard during WW2.
