Magic Lamp Slide at Cape Town
« on: August 27, 2009, 10:46:58 PM »
Hi everyone

I thought some of you might like to see this. It's a glass slide my brother picked up on e-bay for a magic lamp. It is entitled 'Arrival at Durban'. We aren't sure if it is indeed the arrival or the departure from Cape Town. Does anyone know?

Jonathan.
What a find! The 1st Battalion arrived at Durban on 17 September 1899 and their landing was witnessed by crowds of enthusiastic people.  They then travelled on by three trains!!

The 2nd Battalion arrived at Capetown and travelled on to Port Elizabeth on 10 April 1900.  So if the slide is Durban then it is the arrival of the 1st Battalion.

Jonathan !  that is one hell of an emotive picture, and the colour just adds to it.

Well done your Brother, otherwise it could be in a trash can somewhere.

Hello all,
Well I am he, Jonathans brother and I havn't shown him this yet, and I can confirm that it was indeed Durban. Here is the original photo which I have managed to obtain, from which the lantern slide was made.

              Cheers.
