21-3-1918 manchester hill.
after the hill was overun,a lone machine gunner could still be heard blazing away with his machine/lewis gun, then after a while,it remained silent
sgt 6630 archer hoye was the machine gun serjeant at manchester hill,he was killed on the lip of the quarry,as he tried to change the drum on his lewis gun,its most likely that he was the lone gunner, but without any witnesses,he will never get any recognition,he was one of the original members of the battalion, and he was known personally by colonel elstob.
sgt hoye was the son of henry+alice hoye,214 radnor st,hulme, before the war,he worked as a salesman in manchester,he enlisted on 1st sept 1914,16th manchesters,B.coy, aged 28.
he was reported missing, assumed killed at manchester hill,on 21-3-18
