Hi All

I have been interested in finding out some information about my grandfather.  He split up from the family before I was born.  I have just had information the he fought with the Manchester regiment during the first WW.  His DOB is 24 Aug 1888 (that might not be the correct year) and his name was Patrick Mcglynn.  I have been told that his war medals are in the museum at Aston under Lynn.  I do not know why they are there or what medals they are.

My Grandfather had two sons who also served with the Manchester regiment in or around the 2nd WW.  Martin Mcglynn died in Singapore and I have seen his name on the memorial there. His brother Patrick served but I dont know anything about his service but he survived the war.  Both the sons played in the regimental band and Martin played football for the regiment.

Any information about my family would be appreciated.

3524972 Sjt M McGlynn killed in action Singapore 15.2.42 (The day of the surrender).  This is as he is listed in the document "First Battalion The Manchester Regiment Malaya, Thailand, Burma 1939 ~ 1945 which is available from the Regimental Museum. The reference is MR1/3/1/18, this is well worth you getting hold of.

Roy, I don't have his POW record card, I only have 3 "M's" or his brothers QL card, I don't have any "M" QL's perhaps you could get them next time you go to Kew.

Thanks for that Cliff.  I did know he had died.  I went to Singapore and tried to find the spot he died.  He was killed with one other while defending a bridge and was buried there when somebody took his ID tags.  Latter he was taken to the main cemetery and as they would not know which he was they marked him Known unto God and his name is on the cenotaph.  I did try to find the bridge but they have built a shopping mall over it.

You are welcome Hilly.
Take a look at the Photos by Battalion then Far East Photos amongst them are two photos of groups of POW's, obviously Martin will not be there but it is possible that Patrick may be especially if he was also in 1st Bn Manchester Regiment.  My father was there and luckily survived.

Update November 2020
Hilly if you see this update, there is only one Manchester's man in the two POW Group Photos which it has now been confirmed were taken in Nagoya 3B Japan not Singapore.
