« on: August 12, 2009, 07:33:02 PM »
My gr-grandfather Thomas Johnston was in this regiment, he was in the battle of Salonika, I've been struggling to read some of his army papers, particulary the one I've posted, can anyone help?

Jane :)

they aren't easy to read that's for sure, but we will have a go

Thank you Mack

I could post the rest of his records on here, but there is 20 pages, plus 5 pages from his pension records, would that be too much to post?

Oh thats brilliant Mack, you did much better than me!   ;)

According to his pension records, he stayed under the army doctors til 1923/24, it can't have been all bad though, he lived to a ripe old age of 91!

Thanks Mack

According to his records he was at 11 Myrtle St!

Would there happen to be a Frank Layfield on that list? he was born 1888 and would've been living in Openshaw.

the registers are quite big, some have nearly 9000 names in them and take to long to search through,if you have a street/road i will have a look.
are these your layfields+rimmer family
all buried in southern cemetery in grave Z.CE.1021
james,henry layfield buried 5-2-36
peter+frank buried 9-8-47[think they were twin sons of frances and frank]
william,herbert layfield buried 28-5-60
frank layfield 29-8-60
henry,herbert rimmer buried 2-5-52

Hi Mack

I wrote something about Henry Herbert Rimmer here http://themanchesters.org/forum/index.php?topic=3067.0
This is my Nana's uncle, but I don't think he was in the Manchesters.

Yes they are all my family, James Henry Layfield is my Nana's brother, he died at the age of 22, Peter and Frank were twins belonging to my Nana's brother Frank, William Herbert and Frank Layfield both died of heart attacks within months of each other, Frank died on a train just as it was pulling in to didsbury station.

I spoke to my Nana again last night, she said her father Frank wasn't in the war, he was helping to build boats, so that just leaves Henry Herbert Rimmer. :)

Hi Everyone

Can anyone tell me what the writing is in the bottom right corner, I can make out the word 'amended' but not the rest.

Jane :)
