an odd request this but i know nothing about my late fathers war service.i have come across a leather strap, my dad always said it was from his army motorcycle panniers ,it has several badges on it.The reason i am on this board is that one is, i think, a shoulder badge with the word Manchester on it.There also badges from the devon regiment(a seven pointed star with a crown on top and Devon Regiment written below)A recon core badge(an arrow in the middle with lightening down both sides and a ribbon with recon on it.A cloth badge that has UBIQUE on it.
i also have some photos with dates on:Hermannsburg dec1945,Hockend 1945,Natendorf 1945(my father on a motorcycle)Pouligny France 1944 and Brussels sept 1945.In the last picture a badge is visible and it is of a dragon.I also have a picture from 7/2/1946 of him just before coming home and his badge is a bolt of lightening.
My father was a Guernsey man who left all his family there and came over here to join up.He went to France after D Day and was upset that his family was still in German control when he was landing in europe.his boat struck a mine and sank(he could not swim but said he had to learn quickly)
Any help or thoughts on how i can find out more would be of use
thanks again

Hi Keith, and a Warm Welcome to our Forum  ;D

There is not much available to the general public regarding WW2 vets, however his service record is available to you and your family, as next of kin!

If your Mom is still alive, it's free to her, else £30.  You must supply a copy of his death certificate, and fill in the form available here http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/army.html

With regard to the badges, well.......we have quite a few "badge hoodies" on here so I'll leave it to them !!!

Oh and I forgot to mention..............

Run his name through http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/power-search.asp?searchType=powersearch

If you just put in what I am assuming is your surname, you get some quite interesting results !!!

Hi Wendi, thanks for the quick reply,my dad was in the Guernsey Malitia before the war and a picture of the regiment from around 1935 hangs in Castle Cornet museum in Guernsey.I dont know if the badges i quoted are all relavent to my search but i am using them as a starting point.
thanks
