Hi

I am researching my Great Grandfather who I understand was with the KRRC in 1900
I understand his number was rifleman 2952 and later signed up to the great war as 36651 serjant.

I sadly do not have a clue where to start finding out what tours/medals he would have been a part of but a very kind hearted member of the forum was amazing in finding pension records for his WW1 service.. Which also led me to his former service record.

I would really like to know where he and his company fought to build a picture of his early life and any pics of his regiment!

A tall order as a family I only have 1 picture but we a commemorating him in a new headstone and memorial this month as we only recently discovered his military past.

Thank you in anticipation of your kind responses

Antoinette,
Your great grandfather served with the 4th Battalion Kings Royal Rifle Corps in the Boer War.
The 4th Battalion sailed from England on 9th December 1901 and was sent to reinforce Rundle's command in the north-east of the Orange River Colony, being employed chiefly about Harrismith till the close of the war. During this period several very fruitful drives were carried through in this district , the excellent way in which the infantry held the blockhouse lines and posts contributed greatly to the successful results obtained. His medal entitlement was for a Queen's South Africa Medal with two clasps - "Cape Colony" and "South Africa 1902".
His medal index card for WWI shows him as being with the KRRC Depot. He enlisted on 7th September 1914 and he went overseas on 29th July 1915 and was entitled to the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. He was also awarded the Silver War Badge and was discharged 3rd April 1918 (due to "disablement or ill-health caused otherwise than by misconduct").
Happy hunting.

Thank you that's so helpful as I know little to nothing about the Boer War or the military at all!!
I'm amazed and wow at your insight into finding and underdanding of these records and can't thank you enough!

Are there any particularly good bookjs or websites you would suggest?

Kind regards and thanks

Antoinette,
It's a question of how long is a piece of string?
There are any number of websites and books on the Boer War - try Googling "Boer War 4th Battalion KRRC" or similar.
As for books - a good introduction to the various Anglo-Boer wars is "surprisingly" called "The Anglo-Boer Wars" by Michael Barthorp.
Another is The Boer War by Thomas Pakenham.
But as I say, there's plenty of books and info out there.
Best wishes.
