the green crassier, was a large slag heap south of lens,it was one of the objectives,of the canadian corps assault, the attacks were a diversion to keep the germans occupied, and draw their attention away from the british main assault,at third ypres, the crassier was near the river souchez, beyond the broken bridge.
this diversion,cost the canadians,over 9000 casualties and the germans,about 15000.

thank to both of you guys for your speedy information. i think this is an excellent website, as it allows us all to grow our knowledge of what happens at war. Thank you. how come Mr Peach got to do this drawing. what was his precise role as an intelligence officer. he has dated it 1917 so would that mean he was acting with the canadians, or did he pass through afterwards the attack had been completed. This attack depicted at the railway bridge and the Green Crassier sounds very significant, but so so so very sad that so many men died.
apologise for ignorance what is MIC?

An MIC stands for Medal Index Card. It shows which medals each solider was entitled to.

Robert Bonner

Lawrence du Garde Peach,
1890 1974. Educated at Manchester Grammar School and then Gottingen University.
Commissioned in the 8th (Ardwick) Battalion in 1915. Married in 1915, later army intelligence in WWI. His career was as a journalist and humorist.  'L. du G.' of 'Punch', as he was to be regularly credited in 'The Radio Times' when he gave his talks on the radio from 1925. In the 1950s du Garde Peach started writing history books for children's publisher, Wills & Hepworth, otherwise known as Ladybird Books.

It would be intersting to learn when he transferred to the I Corps.

Hi Robert

What a small world, I have a collection of Ladybird books. I've picked the first two of the History series.
Marco Polo(1962) and David Livingstone (1960) by L.Du. Garde Peach

the attack on green crassier, was not successful, there was a lot of gas used by the germans,in this "sideshow"such as green cross[phosgene]yellow cross[mustard] and other nasty types, personally,i think he was gathering intelligence, but much of the intelligence side of the war,is still restricted.
