Death Of my Gt Grandfather
« on: July 08, 2009, 05:51:06 PM »
Hi, I am new to the forum and new to computers in general so please forgive any errors. I am researching my family history and find that my G.Grandfather Robert Cloke Born in Ireland About 1835, was shown in the 1881 census as a Barrack Sergeant Pensioner in Ashton under Lyne Barracks. Although he had another son born in 1886 and his wife remarried as a widow  in 1888, I cannot find his death registered anywhere. I wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction.  I was told that he probably became a member of the Manchester Regiment in 1881.  However in the 1881 census all other entries around his are members of the Lancashire Militia.  Any help as to where to look would be appreciated.

Hi cboat, and a Warm Welcome to our forum  ;D

It is possible that he died abroad, so have you checked the overseas index?  It's available from:  http://www.findmypast.com/welcome.jsp

Also his service record will be at The National Archives in Kew.  You could try to obtain that, it would make interesting reading and probably solve your puzzle too !

Sadly they are not available online, but a researcher would not charge you a fortune to obtain it. (our man at Kew, and member of our forum is themonsstar  ;) ).....you could always ask for a quote.

Thankyou for your help. All the Clokes and Sarah Murphy listed belong in my family tree. I have tried the overseas deaths at find my past with no luck.  So it would appear my next step in The National Archives.

I had thought of him dying in his home town but I have not much idea of where that will be. Family talk is that he came from Cork but I have no other information. I will try Kew first and then try the Irish connection although I think it will be very difficult from what I have read.

Have you tried the lds pilot site? pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html  it's down for maintenence right now, but they're putting the Irish civil registration indexes on there. Click on the UK part of the map and scroll down to Irish records. Worth a shot :)
