Hi There,

Can anyone tell me more about Hartshead Barracks i.e. where it was or is?
I have information from a marriage that the groom was in the 63rd  Manchester Regiment
in 1904/5, and was living in Hartshead Barracks.  Can this be correct as I just read that
the 63rd  along with the 96th  became 1 and 2 Battalion the Manchesters in 1881.

Thanks
Swinno.

Not too sure as to the location of the barracks of that name but Hartshead Pike is well known in the Oldham/Ashton area for the magnificent views available from the Tower area.
Re the numbering of the Regiment, both Battalions were referred to be their numbers as well as the number of the Bn, i.e. 63rd the reference was 1st Bn and 96th 2nd Bn. Even after the amalgamation of the 2nd into the 1st in 1948 or thereabouts the reference was 63rd/96th  1st Bn The Manchester Regiment.

Thanks George,

So the 63rd would have become the 63rd 1st Bn The Manchester Regiment. Thats interesting.
Barracks Hartshead I have since found was/is  in Stalybridge.
