I am looking for help with those of you skilled in BMD information searches.
I am trying to find the dates of death of the following two SNCO's of the 2nd VB Manchester Regiment.  Both are on the 1891 cencus and Hilditch on the 1901 cencus.

1.   1474  Armourer Sgt. Thomas William HEPPLESTONE.  b. 1853 @ Heywood.

2.   1564  Provost Sgt. Thomas HILDITCH.  b. 1842 @ Hulme.

if its any help to our census experts, sgt hepplestone was living at 38 hampden st,ardwick in the early 1880s.
ardwick cemetery and rusholme rd cemetery were both in the general area.
sgt hilditch for the same period, was residing at 22 essex st,stretford, with his wife sarah and 7 children.

Two possibles for Hilditch

Thomas Hilditch born abt 1842
1903 Qtr to June in Barton Upon Irwell

Thomas Hilditch born abt 1842
1909 Qtr to March in Toxteth Park

Obviously the first one is preferable  ;D

I looked to see if they were transcribed on Ancestry :-\ , however it's not complete for all years and if they died abroad you'd need to find someone with access to the overseas index on findmypast.com or some such other pay-to-view site which has the overseas indexes.

FYI this shows the current situation of the transcribed GRO General Index ~ the only other way would be to trawl the actual indexes....

i am seeing a connection here with the stensby family who were very active in the VB ( forgot which batt) their gunshop on shudehill was also known as the volunteer HQ (IIRC)

stensby's shop is still there (well further down shudehil) but not owned by the family any longer

Thomas Hepplestone first listed himself as a Gunmaker in 1863.There was a nice side/side shotgun made by him for sale recently on JoeSalter.com. T Stensby list themselves as being est 1810 but traded under the name Styan before that.If you go in the shop there are pictures of some of their previous shops along Shudehill. If you go into their gun showroom its really amazing to go down the spiral staircase and see all the rifles that have been collected that are not for sale

Thanks for all the info.  Excellent stuff, particularly the Gun maker info.

L/Sgt. A Stensby-Pickford was an excellent shot  in H Coy, 2nd VB.  Definately a connection between Stensbys Gunshop and my man.

thanks all
