hi im trying to find out about my grandads life during ww2 his name was Harold greenhalgh 4130602 8 platoon d company 2nd batt manc regt we have his bible which has shillong assam wrote on it and some photos but we would really like to get more details thanks ste.

'D' Company 2nd Manchesters was detached from the rest of the battalion in November 1943 as the machine-gun company of 36 British Infantry Division operating in India and Burma.  It was proud to claim that it had supported every battalion of the two Brigades of 36 Division in both attack and defence.

Its particular claim to fame was at the battle for Pinwe in northern Burma which is fully detailed as an appendix in Colonel King-Clark's history 'Forward from Kohima'.  A really gripping account of close quarter fighting against the Japanese.

hi thanks for the replys no sadly he passed away a few years ago speaking to my mum we regret never finding out more about what he did during the war .thanks ste

In that case you can apply for his service record (well your mum can, being technically next of kin)  you can download the forms from this site.  You will need a copy of his death certificate and £30.
