Hi,

I have just joint the forum - so HI to everyone out there - great site - look forward to speaking to you.

I am looking to find out any information on my grandfather, Harold Cottom 1589379.  He served in the 2nd World War and was a POW in Singapore.  He served in the Lancashire Fusiliers under the Manchester Regiment.  The reason I am trying to find out information is because my dad recently took a Brain Haemorrhage and had to finish work.  Now he is unable quite a few things and also, having an office of his own, he used to keep his father's medals at work.  However, when we went to collect his belongings, we were unable to find the medals and no-one seems to know where they went to either!!

As my grandfather would never speak about the war, I would really like to find out some information about him for the sake of my dad.  Also, if anyone knows if it is possible to buy replica medals.  All we have a record of is that my grandfather received the Burma Star, The Star? and the King's medal (sorry, not sure if these are the correct names for them).

I look forward to hearing from you if anyone is able to point me in the right direction.

Many thanks,

Sonia

Hi Sonia and a Warm Welcome to our Forum  ;D

Perhaps you might like to consider obtaining your grandfathers Service Record, which is held by the Ministry of Defence, and is available for £30 to next of kin (your father could apply) You will need your grandfathers death certificate and the forms can be downloaded from here:  http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/army.html

In the mean time you might like to get your father to look at this link, he maybe able to identify your grandfathers medals.  http://www.medalsuk.co.uk/ww2/ww2index.html

It's heartbreaking that his medals have disappeared.  If you google there are several companies which make replica medals....

Hope this helps !
