its thought that a 100 men of the manchesters,were taken to najaf and killed there by the arabs.

The site where the prisoners were held in najaf is a museum now, attached are some links which show graffiti by british prisoners, and a photo of prisoners in courtyard, wish it was a bit clearer, my great grandfather  might be in there somewhere.
Can make out the name schofield in one the videos of graffiti scratched in wall

I got this via the GWF - a spread sheet of those entitled to the GSM with bar Iraq and the whereabouts of the medal, if known. The spread sheet also contains some service details

It's interesting to note a few Pre-Great War Regulars at Hillah; and also Sgt 9131 / 3512663 Arthur Edward Heap DCM.  He enlisted in 17th Bttn @ Dec 1914 and went overseas 8/11/1915. Later transferred to 2nd Bttn and awarded DCM (LG 3/12/1918), continuing with the Bttn after most men had departed.

theres one pre boer war regular amongst them.sgt john William currie,sreved in the boer war and all through WW1,he didn't earn any gallantry medals but he was awarded the LSGC medal and a well earned MSM for his exemplary service with the regiment,his brother joseph was also a regular with the regt,he won DCM on 12-3-1915 alas he was killed in april 1915

the only member of the manchesters who was captured was 3514380 George,w schofield,a bit late with this but I only ID him yesterday
