There is a John Haney who is on a church memorial in Dewsbury, West Yorks. Although there are 2 or three other John Haneys who died in WW1, the date of death coincides with this man.

Could anyone please help to establish a connection.

Thank you

Hi Albert-and welcome to the forum. John Haney died at 7.30 am on the 25th November 1915 at the Military Hospital, Ashton-under-Lyne, of Heart failure. His NOK was given as his Sister,Mary, of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire and he is shown as being born in Dewsbury around 1874 (Age at death 41yrs and 5 months)-so it looks like you have found your man.

You Superstar !!

Thank you very much for this info. A group of us scoured the old newspaper columns of the time but found nothing.

Is there any more information I can find such as did his sister have a married name (this could place her to a local family) and is there an address.

Regards

Albert

Hi Albert-I don't think his sister was married. She is named as Mary Haney living in Dewsbury, Yorkshire-no address I'm afraid. His address is given as 3, Bolton Yard, Castle Hall, Stalybridge. He Attested for home service only on the 3rd October 1915 at Ashton-under-Lyne. He states that he had served previously with the Manchester Territorials for 7 Years and 295 days (Time Expired)-Probably, given that he lived in Ashton, the 9th Battalion. His occupation was given as a labourer. He was discharged as being "Not likely to become an efficient soldier" on the 18th November due to him suffering from Chronic Bronchial Catarrh. He must have been admitted to the War hospital pretty soon after being discharged being that he passed away a week later. One other thing-He could possibly be John Thomas Haney. (He is described as that on one document).
