Books for a beginner

My nephew (26) is showing a keen interest in his family history, especially anything military.  As we have two family members who served in WWI with the Manchesters, I would like to buy him a couple of books to start him off.  Which books do you suggest and where can I buy them?  Of course I'd want to read them first!  Thanks  :)

We discussed Stanley Weintraub's "Silent Night" on this topic some time ago

I seem to remember reading a review about this book, don't know where, but it was sometime in the last month, it sounded very interesting. S :)

if it was the Manchester Regiment you were looking for, my suggestion would be

Manchester Pals by Mike Stedman

mainly because of the impact it made on me, there are many books to the regiment including some very good ones from Robert

regimental books

you should also have a look at the ones available from the museum
