My grandad was appointed to the Manchester Regiment by the Secretary Of State for War on the 29th january 1915.
I am trying to trace my family history and I have no record of my Grandfather after his appointment.
I would be grateful for any information on his service record and last known whereabouts.

In the Manchester City Battalions book he is listed as G. Vaughan, CSM, 21402, 22nd Bn, C company, XII platoon--also he is on a group photo of NCOs--but you would have to pick him out though!

Cheers Timberman. The security settings on my Manch Bns prohibit me from copying contents unfortunately. Personally, I would like to know what insignia a CSM would have on his sleeve? Looking at the group pic of the sergeants, the seated row, has at either end, two sgts with what looks like a crown over his stripes, could those be CSMs?

Wendi

It would appear that, a sergeant has 3 stripes, a Colour Sergeant & a Staff Sergeant are the same rank, both with crowns above the 3 stripes, but in different branches of the Army.  Colour if an infantry man, Staff elsewhere ie a corps etc. Wikipedia again !

P.S. I got the National Archive records and have 6 medal cards including the one for the Manchesters, they were for Kent, Shropshire and Middlesex, so he certainly moved about!
alan, the other medal cards are not his, they were photographed in batches of six,the others, are for different men.

Alan, his Medal Index Card is the one with his Regimental Number 21402 on it, as mack says the others belong to other men with the same name.

It also tells us that he first went to Western Europe, on 11th November 1915, was in the 22nd Battalion, while CSM and was promoted Warrent Officer 2nd Class.
