First post/query on this site.  My wife's grandfather, James Spilsbury, is listed as being a member of the 4th Battalion, the Manchester Regiment for 7 years prior to WWI.  This information is from his WWI records when he joined the South Lancashire Regiment in 1914.
He was born 1888 in Ardwick and is on the 1901 census aged 14 living in Gorton and was 26 years old when joining up in 1914, so his Manchester Regiment service is a 7 year period between 1901 and 1914.
Where would he have served and where can I apply to obtain his service record?

Hi Holker and a Warm Welcome to our Forum  ;D

It would really depend upon which Battalion he was in, but you can get an idea of places from the 1st and 2nd potted histories on our mother site here.  http://www.themanchesters.org/batt%20index.htm

If he was a time served soldier he would have volunteered for the South Lancs in 1914, and his service record prior to that date would be at The National Archives in Kew.

Hi Wendi,

Having re-read the information on your link it would appear that the 4th Battalion was a short lived unit that supplied manpower to the 1st and 2nd Battalions.   Have emailed my contact near Kew to have a look for me when she next visits, so hopefully something will turn up.  Thanks.   :)
