This is my Grandfather,
I was told he was invalided out.
Can anyone tell me a) Have I got his number correct; found it on the back of a 'GRI Services Rendered'
                                 medal?
                          b) Where/How do I find out about early discharges and his army record?
Any info would be great - as his Germanised name caused considerable domestic strife, this entire chapter of his life was swept under the carpet and never talked about again.

nb I have all the usual family history dates and places - so no problems there.

G'day Dad of 3, welcome to the forum!

Roy will be able to have a check of the medal roll to check the Service Number is correct.

Do you have a rough date as to when he was invalided out? If you have some of his biographical details, such as DOB, addresses etc, it may help to narrow him down, but shouldn't be too much trouble with the surname!

Cheers,

Dave

There was no match to the Service number in the MICs that I could find. Are you sure it is correct?

I have had a look at the casualty lists from the major engagements in the 16th's War Diary, and couldn't see his name. How do you know he was with the 16th Batt?

Dave

Think this is him:

Description Medal card of Von Slicker, August L
Manchester Regiment 6434 Lance Corporal

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=5891780&queryType=1&resultcount=76

The Service Number puts him in the 16th Batt, but he does not appear in the Book of Honour Platoons. Maybe the MIC will give us some more clues.

I am guessing the GRI you refer to is his Silver War Badge (shown below), 26822 being its number.

Cheers,

Dave

Thanks Slob,

He was discharged under Kings Reg 392 III CC: Recruits with more than three months service considered unfit for further military service.

Makes sense as to why he doesn't appear in the platoons.

Can't help but think he was lucky to not serve in France.

Hi everyone !

The MIC that has been posted is for The Silver War Badge instigated in September 1916 "The badge was awarded to all of those military personnel who were discharged as a result of sickness or wounds contracted or received during the war, either at home or overseas."

By wearing the badge a man not in uniform would be recognised as "having done his bit" and had been honourably discharged ~ very valuable to a chap with a German sounding surname I imagine !

hiya dad3.
many men suffered the same plight, but they can all hold their heads high,i feel sorry for men like your grandfather,he had a difficult decision, wether to fight on the side of his grandfathers country,or fight for his place of birth.
hes a bloke to be proud of
theres a good chance, that his service record survived the blitz, drop monsstar a PM.he may be able to help.
if you have a photo of him, dave will add it to the roll of honour, for the 16th battalion
his details are already included in the database for the 16th batt.

All details are in the Database.

I reckon any feller who volunteered, whether they eventually went overseas or not, deserves our highest respect. Especially those who enlisted in the first days of the war.

Dave

Hello,
Dave, Slob, Wendi and Mack
Thanks for all your info - quite overwhelming how you have all helped to build a remarkable picture.
I have a number of photos, but none from when he was in the army, and only 1 when he was younger and working for Bruner Mond. Please advise what would best suit and how to send a scan.jpg?
Can't thank you all enough, Dad_of3.

Mack,
Forgive my ignorance, but who/what is 'monsstar' , is this part of Kew's Archive - how would I access August's service record?
Also the 16th Batt data base, what, where and can I access it?

Talking about 'unhappy events' his Uncle Ernest reportedly was sent to the Isle of Man as being of risk to security. But that is something for another day.

Do you need any family history info?
Cheers Dad_of3.
