I am doing some family history research and wonder if anyone can help. My grandfather was George Irvin Hickinbotham and he was a private in the 1st Battalion Manchester Regiment in 1924. He was stationed in Guernsey? and married a local girl. I got the detail of his regiment from his marriage certificate. On the birth certificate of his 1st child he appears to have altered the spelling of his name to George Irvine Higginbotham. Is there any way of tracing his army service record and finding out what he was doing in Guernsey, when he joined up, etc? Any advice would be most appreciated. Many thanks.

and welcome to the forum

the regiment would have been there on garrison duty

the good news is that you will be able to get his service record from the MoD at glasgow if you have permission from his next of kin

have a look at this link for details of how to do it

Thanks Chaps, I will follow the suggestions and see where it leads. Georges son - my dad - has also passed away so I think I may be the closest living relative. I've got all the birth certs so we will see what happens. Do you know if there are any books on the Manchesters that may give me a general flavour about the regiment. The army seems to pop up regularly in my research. Georges son Jimmy was serving with the Commando Btry of the 29th Commando Regt, Royal Artillery when he died under very strange circumstances in the USA. When I was a young wipper snapper I saw photos of his funeral and he is buried in the USA - I got some detail from Arlington but the full story seems to have been hushed up - cannot find out any more.
Many thanks for your help.
